In the vast expanse of North Dakota, south of Mandan, resides a legendary figure whose impact reaches far beyond the state’s borders. Chad Berger, the man behind Chad Berger Bucking Bulls, graciously welcomed Dakota Horse Magazine for an interview, offering a glimpse into his bustling ranching life. As we explore the ranch and discuss his journey, it becomes evident that Chad Burger is not just a businessman; he is a living testament to the rich heritage of rodeo and bull riding.
Growing Up in Rodeo:
Born into a rodeo family, Chad Berger’s roots run deep in the world of rodeo. As a child, he attended rodeos with his mom and dad, Joe, and Darlene Berger, immersing their family in the vibrant culture. His father’s partnership with stock contractor, John Stevenson, in the cattle business helped lay the foundation for Berger’s future endeavors. From Little Britches rodeos to ranching, cattle buying, and eventually breeding world-class bulls, the rodeo spirit proved to be ingrained in his DNA.
Chad Berger is a fifth generation Berger. His great, great grandfather is buried in St. Anthony, N.D. “My grandpa and my dad are buried in Mandan, none of us have ever left. I always tell everybody, I was born in Mandan, and I’m going to die in Mandan. I love where I’m from, and that’s something you should never forget,” explained Berger.
The Evolution of Chad Berger and Bucking Bulls:
Reflecting on his past, Chad Berger reminisces about the inception of the bucking bull business, a venture that took shape more than 20 years ago, with his wife, Sarah, alongside for every step. Stemming from his rodeo upbringing, Berger’s passion for bull riding led to the establishment of thriving breeding genetics and a feeding operation to cycle along with it. With a broad scope that spans into multiple states, the ranch has become a hub of activity, attracting attention from enthusiasts and athletes alike.
Bull Riding and Beyond:
Berger said he loved riding broncs and bulls during his high school years and bulldogged as well. Eventually, he took up team roping. “There is nothing like bull riding, though. It’s a natural high, and I just love competing,” said Berger.
So as the gates would open, Berger found his calling in raising and breeding bulls. As a 12-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year, Berger has witnessed the rise of world champion bulls under his care, including notable names like Smooth Operator and Asteroid.
Business and Legacy:
Beyond the arena, Berger transformed his cattle buying expertise into a flourishing business of breeding top-tier bulls. He attributes his succes to the lessons passed down by his father, Joe, who emphasized the importance of pedigree and had a keen eye for quality.
“My dad taught me so much, and I don’t think there was a better bull man in the world. He knew animals and passed a lot of that on to us. Successful people don’t come by that themselves. I’ve just had a lot of good people around me. My family is involved. All my hired men are great people, and I always tell them, ‘I’m the head coach.’ I call the plays, and it’s their job to convert. And if they convert, we will win,” stated Berger.
The positive, forward-thinking mentality instilled in him since childhood played a crucial role in building a team of dedicated individuals who share his vision. “I have no room for negativity in my soul, in my body. I think that a big part of success is a positive thought and always being positive when something goes wrong. I like to pass it on to other people. The power of positive thinking is really powerful,” explained Berger.
Caring for Bulls:
Addressing concerns about animal welfare in rodeo, Berger passionately emphasizes the impeccable care given to his bulls. Rejecting the notion of mistreatment, he invites skeptics to witness firsthand the comfort and respect afforded to the animals on his ranch. A visit to the cemetery, where his old bulls rest with headstones, serves as a testament to his profound respect for these animals.
Promoting North Dakota:
Although Berger’s fame extends beyond North Dakota, he says his heart remains firmly rooted in his hometown of Mandan. He proudly promotes the state, dispelling misconceptions about its weather while highlighting its breathtaking beauty, nutritious soil, and great people. His commitment to showcasing North Dakota’s charm is evident as he shares the joy of returning home after every trip.
The North Dakota legend ended with this, “I always tell everybody my most favorite part of when I go off to Fort Worth to the rodeo or Phoenix to the bull riding is when that plane lands in Bismarck, because I know I’m home.”
Berger’s story is more than a chronicle of rodeo triumphs; it is a narrative of passion, legacy, and the enduring spirit of North Dakota. As he continues to shape the future of bull riding, Chad Berger remains a living legend, embodying the essence of rodeo in every stride, and providing a positive example for generations to come.
